Vishwamitra - Challenger of Gods

About Vishwamitra

Rishi Vishwamitra is considered to be one of the most revered rishis (sages) of the ancient India. As per the holy Puranas, there have been only 24 Rishis in India who have the Gayatri Mantra. It is believed that Sage Vishwamitra is the first saint of the 24 saints, and Sage Yajnavalkya the last. He also claims the distinction of being the author of the majority portion of the Mandala 3 of the Rig-Veda. Read on to explore the biography of Sage Vishwamitra further…

Meeting Sage Vasishta
While on a tour of his kingdom, Kaushika came across the hermitage of the great sage, Vasishta, along with his army. The peace and the solitude surrounding the hermitage impressed him deeply and he entered inside. There, he and his army were well received and served a splendid feast. Surprised at the welcome received by him, Kaushika asked sage Vasishta that how he managed to feed such a large army.

The sage replied that the food was provided to him by his calf, Nandini, gifted to him by Lord Indra himself. Kaushika offered the sage a large amount of wealth in return of the calf. However, the sage declined the offer. Enraged at the refusal of sage Vasishta, he ordered his army to forcefully take the calf to his kingdom. The sage used his yogic powers to bring forth a huge militia of fierce warriors, who defeated the army of Kaushika. Kaushika was captured and brought before the sage, who pardoned him.

Renunciation
The above mentioned incident deeply affected Kaushika and made him realize that power of penance was greater than that of physical strength. He relinquished his throne and began his journey to become a sage, greater than even Vasishta. After undergoing intense meditation and severe asceticism, he was bestowed with the title of Brahmarishi by Lord Brahma himself. He was given the name of 'Vishwamitra' (friend of all).

ausika was a kshatriya that is to say, a person of rajasic nature. However, as a result of his deeds in previous lives satwic tendencies and attitudes entered his consciousness and he went about adhering strictly to truth. He transformed himself and sublimated his consciousness into a pure state. The great mantra that he brought to the world is the Gayathri. He is known as Viswamitra, the mitra of the entire Viswa (Universe) for he became the well wisher of the entire viswa. Brahmins have acclaimed and accepted the Gayathri manthra as a Divine gift, they have revered and recited it and derived immense bliss. Even though Kausika was janana kshatriya, he become a karma brahmana and he was accepted as such by vedas, which emanated from the voice of the God. Thus it is clear that the vedas proclaim a path to all mankind without prejudice, partiality or sense of distinction.

Ram and Lakshman perform guru-seva by pressing Vishvamitra's feet and legs
In Tretha Yuga, Vismamitra took the help of Rama to ensure the conduct of the yajna without any hindrance from the demonic forces. His ashram was called Siddhashrama. Actually the heart of every human being is a Siddhashrama. The moment evil thoughts or bad feelings arise in man, that is the beginning of all sins. When the heart is polluted with such sinful thoughts, one should seek the help of "Atma Rama", just as Viswamitra sought the help of Rama to put an end to the rakshasi Thataka. If you think of God and pray to Him with sincere devotion, every deed done by you will be a yajna. The mind is the altar of this yajna. You must offer higher purpose. He had no doubt prepared the ground for the destruction of the various demons, but he had also prepared the ground for the marriage of Rama and Sita.

When Viswamitra was taking Rama and Lakshmana for the purpose of killing Thataki, half way in their journey they heard a big noise. Rama and Lakshmana asked Viswamitra how in a forest where there were not many people, such a big noise could come. Viswamitra told them that in the Himalayas there is a particular mountain called the Kailasha and on that mountain there is a lake by name manasa sarovara. The river sarovara flows out of the Manasasarowar. An ancient king who belonged to the dynasty of Rama was responsible for bringing this river down to the plains and his name was Bhagiratha. Viswamitra stated that Bhagiratha brought down the river Ganges. As the river Sarayu was joining the river Ganges nearby the noise was so loud. Viswamitra had implied a good inner spiritual meaning for his statement. He regarded the word Kailasha as symbolic of the pure mind. Our mind has been compared to the lake manasasarovara. The outflow of several ideas from the pure and clean mind had been compared with the outflow of the river Sarayu from the lake Manasasarovara. He imagined that these ideas are springing as if they had pure white foam in them. When these sacred ideas are emanating from Manasasarovara in the form of Sarayu and when they are touched by the rays of sun, they produce a Sound the primordial sound OM. This sacred sound Om, or the pranava is emanating from the heart of every individual. Viswamitra explained that this is the origin of the noise. You can hear this sound of pranava only in a place which is pure.

After walking some distance, they heard a sound which was not very pleasant. That was causing some fear also. Rama asked Viswamitra, what that fearful sound was? Viswamitra told Rama that the fearful sound was made by Thataki a rakshasi (Ogress) who was causing havoc and trouble to all rishis (Saints) in the forest. He also explained that Rama was brought there to kill Thataki. She was originally a yakshini. Since Rama knew all dharmas and all the secrets of things he asked Viswamitra how a yakshini, which cannot exercise its own will could cause such a harm and suggested that Thataki is only a rakshasi. Viswamitra gave an interesting story in this context. He described the story of Suketa who was a yaksha, who was praying to the Lord because he had no children. As a result of this, he was blessed with a very strong daughter by name Thataki, the rakshasi. This Thataki married a person by name Sangalu and after the marriage she had two sons by name Subahu and Maricha. After some years, the husband died. Unable to bear the death of her husband Sangalu, she became very much excited and in great passion she developed anger and with the help of her two sons, she has been all the time giving pain and trouble to the rishis. Realizing this anger and bad conduct on the part of this woman, Agasthya cursed her and said that she will thereafter conduct herself as a rakshasi.

Viswamitra narrated this story and said that originally she was yakshini but as a result of the curse of Agasthya she became a rakshasi. Now she can exercise her will over human beings. After telling Rama about this power of the yakshini, he took him to Mithilapura. Viswamitra had also been establishing the truth that is contained in the statement that sin is not distinct and unconnected with one’s actions.

Rama was sitting alone in a room and was trying to press his feet and relieve the pain due to walking. The doors of the room were nearly closed, but there was a small opening. Narada came there and looked through the opening in the door and found that Rama was pressing His own feet. He loudly exclaimed, "Oh Paramatma, what has happened? why are you pressing your our feet?" Viswamitra appeared on the scene immediately and told Narada that this secret of the incarnation of Rama must be kept carefully. He requested Narada not to bring about a catastrophe by announcing it openly. Viswamitra said that if this is done, then the marriage of Sita will not take place and the destruction of Ravana will not came about.

Viswamitra recognised that the atma, which is identical with Divinity is present in everyone. It takes the form of pragnana (wisdom) in the created form in order to establish the identity between the Jeevatma and Paramatma. When we look at the story of Ramayana, we find that at a certain point, Viswamitra comes to Dasaratha and requests him to send two of his sons for the specific purpose of protecting his yajnas in the forest. During the journey he taught Rama and Lakshmana two mantras, Bala and Atibala. Not only did he teach these mantras but he also gave them all the weapons that were in his possession and taught them how to use those weapons. After giving them all this training, he took to Mithilapura after the yajna was over. It is not as if these mantras, Bala and Atibala, have something special in them.

While taking them to Mithilapura, he also undertook the task of getting Rama to remove the curse on Ahalya. After reaching Mithilapura, he gets Ramachandra to break Siva’s bow and marry Sita. After the marriage of Sita, Viswamitra disappeared that very night and was not to be seen thereafter. Thus we see that the story of Viswamitra begins with taking Rama and Lakshmana with him and performing the marriage of Sita as the foundation for the ultimate destruction of Ravana. When he came to Dasartha he was in the first stage. When Viswamitra taught the mantras Bala and Atibala to Rama and Lakshmana, he took the form of Taijasa. When he undertook to perform the marriage of between Sita the jeevatma with Rama the Paramathma, he took the form of pragna.

Because Viswamitra reached this sacred stage of Pragna, he could realise that Rama was the incarnation of Narayana himself and in that content he was in contact with Rama. in this stage of Pragna, there will be a commendable determination to fulfil a task. That determination is permanent and unwavering. In this stage Viswamitra developed some kind of enmity with Vasista because Vasista being described as a Brahmarishi while he himself was described only as a Rajarishi. He was determined to see that he was also addressed as a Brahmarishi himself. Withstanding all kinds of difficulty and never wavering from his determination Viswamitra went into a very severe penance. He could withstand all the tests to which he was subjected by God himself. In the end he succeeded in being called a Brahmarishi by Vasista himself. Because he took such a hard and difficult vow and succeeded we call him brahman, Thus if we want to achieve anything we should go into the state of an unwavering mind and a determination without swerving from the objective. Viswamitra demonstrated such a sacred truth.

Among the lessons which Viswamitra gave to the world, Gayatri Mantra is an important one. This mantra teaches that there is equal opportunity of spiritual achievement for all religions, for all people of all countries and people of all communities and all places.

Viswamitra always proclaimed that the two aspects beauty and happiness really come out of our own mind. His great achievements and his courage are indescribable by ordinary words. He had very many potent weapons with him. He never cared for the great weapons which he possessed in his own house. He knew that Narayana Himself had come as a young boy and was born in Dasaratha’s household. So all that Viswamitra did was based on this knowledge.

The sage who exemplifies the transformation from the Rajasic to satvic quality is Viswamitra. His antipathy to sage Vasishta went to the extentt of even contemplating the destruction of the sage. Viswamitra was hovering near the ashram when he overheard a conversation betweeen Vasishta and his spouse Arundhati. Arundhati expressed her admiration for the beautiful unblemished light the full moon was shedding that night. Immediately Vasishta observed, "Tonight’s full moon is shining untainted like the pure penance of Viswamitra." On hearing these words, Viswamitra realised how mistaken he was regarding Vasishta and rushed into the ashram, fell at the feet of Vasishta and prayed to him to forgive him.

Vasishta lifted Viswamitra and hailed him as "Brahmarishi" (a sage who has realised the Supreme Self). Vasishta, who had previously described Viswamitra as a Rajarishi (a royal sage), spontaneously hailed him

Legends surrounding Vishwamitra
It is said that Sage Vishwamitra created a parallel heaven, known as Trishanku Swarga, for King Trishanku. It is also believed that in the great epic Ramayana, Vishvamitra was born as Lakshmana, the brother of Lord Rama. He gave his brothers the knowledge of the Devastras (celestial weaponry), trained them in advanced religion and taught them how to kill powerful demons

Spiritual powers shall not be misused for materialistic enjoyment

On seeing the sight of a beautiful lady taking bath in forlorn deep dense jungles... this renowned Sage could not contain his self and fell from grace. He committed the same mistake that Adam had committed. Let me make it clear that Adam did not commit a mistake. It was all destined by God and for the perpetuation of life itself... that sacred union with Eve was planned by God. It was not a sin but Sage Vishwamitra indulged in a practice which was not called for. He paid for his sins. Sage Vishwamitra had to repeat the spiritual journey all over again

Sage Vashistha and Sage Vishwamitra were almost contemporaries but in the end... Sage Vishwamitra fell from grace... all his efforts to excel in the spiritual pursuits of life fell apart because of a single mistake he committed. While passing through the deep jungles (dense forests) he came upon the sight of an extremely beautiful maiden having bath under an isolated waterfall in most sensual circumstances... he lost control. He forgot for a moment his desired goal of life... and indulged in the most un wanton desire... the desire for sex! On the contrary Sage Vashistha continued on his path by the lift and Sage Vishwamitra had to take the staircase... he deeply regretted the mistake but there was no remedy. He had to practice it all over again!

The sight of a beautiful maiden taking bath in most sensual circumstances and that too in an isolated location is not something that occurs all of a sudden. While proceeding on the path of pure Spirituality... God desists us from taking absolute control of senses and the mind. God Almighty does not desire many people at a time gaining self realization, enlightenment. It is not to be. It is only in a century or so that one or two people at the most gain emancipation and finally salvation.

In the case of Sage Vishwamitra it was not a sight by choice. While proceeding on the path of pure spirituality... it is God Almighty which does not desire us from completing our cosmic journey of at the earliest. It is at this moment that the choicest of the materialistic wants are offered to us. If we succumb like  Sage Vishwamitra... we fail.

KALI YUGA - Yuga of Misery and Mercy

KALI YUGA
Kaliyug  - you may have heard this expression when someone is exasperated by the way things are happening.. ever pondered what it implies?

The Age of Kali - Kaliyug is the last of the four stages that the world goes through as part of the cycle of Mahayugas. According to Hindu cosmology, time is cyclical and you can consider the four Yugas to be similar to the four seasons that keep recurring in perpetual eternity.

In each successive yuga (Satya to Treta to Dvapar to Kali), all human virtues keep getting diminished including mankind's intellect, age, honesty, values etc. In this post I'll talk not just about the moral devaluation of humanity which is self-evident, but also try to highlight something that's generally missed in the narrative.

Beginning of Kaliyuga

By the calculations of Aryabhatta, the most celebrated mathematician of ancient India, Kaliyug Ugadi/Gudi-Padwa/Navreh/Cheti-Chand  and the reason why it is called Yug-aadi is because this is the day Kaliyug began (BTW its also the day when Brahma began creation).
began between the 18th to 20th of February 3102 BCE which tells us that we are currently in the 5118th year of this Era. in India we recently celebrated
Brahma began Creation on the day of Ugadi
Brahma began Creation on the day of Ugadi
Srimad Bhagavatam [12.2.31] records Kali-yuga as having begun when the constellation of the seven sages or Big Dipper passed through the Nakshatra of Magh. This took place roughly 36 years after the battle of Mahabharat that wiped out millions off the face of the Earth. You may ask why it didn't start immediately after the war but according to Vaishnav tradition, the demon Kali could not step on the planet till the time Krishna, the Supreme Lord was present on it. It was only after Krishna's departure that Kaliyuga could descend.
Kali could not appear till Krishna remained on Earth
Kali could not appear till Krishna remained on Earth
As I always do in each post, I am going to share with you inputs not just from Hindu mythology but also beliefs from other parts of the world that may match ours. You would be surprised to know that the last cycle of the Mayan calendar started in 3113-14 BCE, very close to the Hindu dates of beginning of Kaliyuga! Without any connection between the two civilizations, their calendars begin with only a difference of 11 years. What is also interesting is that in both these calendars, this is the last stage of the cycle.
Two civilizations at opposite ends come up with similar calendars

Scientific Basis of Yugas?

The length of Kali Yuga, the smallest of the four Yugas is believed to be 432,000 years which is the basic unit of Yuga calculation. The Dvapar-Yuga is twice this time, Treta is thrice and Satyuga is four times this period with the total adding up to 4.32 Million years. That is a staggering period and none of us would be alive to see the end but we can certainly see if such a huge number holds any significance in science.

We know that Earth's orbit is not a perfect circle but is elliptical in shape. Here I need to introduce you to the concept of ORBITAL ECCENTRICITY which states that the shape of Earth's orbit changes over time and can vary between nearly circular (low eccentricity) to more elliptical (high eccentricity). While the change is a part of nature's process, what is important from our point of view is that these variations occur over a period of 413,000 years - quite close to the basic unit of a Yuga!
Earth's orbit changes from circular to elliptical over one Yuga Unit of Time
Earth's orbit changes from circular to elliptical over one Yuga Unit of Time
This change in orbital eccentricity has a profound effect on the conditions prevailing on Earth including massive temperature changes but this is not all. Each Yuga is supposed to have a period of dawn and dusk that takes about 10% of its time ~ 43,000 years. Is there a scientific phenomenon that repeats during this duration? The answer is YES and that is the change in the angle of Earth's axis known as the AXIAL TILT - Earth does not rotate in space like a perfect sphere but tilts just like a spinning top giving rise to seasons.

What is interesting is that the angle of the tilt does not stay constant rather takes approximately 41,000 years to shift between a tilt of 22.1° and 24.5° and back which again leads to massive climate change on the planet. These two phenomenon combined with PRECESSION of Equinoxes mentioned in the article {Black Holes & Bhagavatam} together form the basis of something known as Milankovitch Cycles that give rise to rapid changes in Earth's temperature heralding amongst other catastrophes, the Ice-Ages.
Milankovitch Cycles
We saw in the post titled {Pralaya - the End of Days} the Great Deluge mentioned in various world mythologies may actually be the memory of the meltdown after the Ice-Age ends. You would remember that pralaya marks the transitions between Yugas and I believe the Milankovitch Cycles fit in quite nicely with the timelines of Yuga cycles as described in our Puranas.

On a side note, let me just mention something related to Astrology (which BTW I don't really understand too well myself). Scientists say that if Earth had been the only planet around Sun, the eccentricity of its orbit wouldn't be too much. The real reason for the huge difference is due to the effect of the gravitational fields of Jupiter and Saturn! Similarly, precession is seen due to the tidal forces exerted by the Sun and the Moon on Earth's equator. No wonder then that so much importance is given to the effect of planets especially Surya and Shani in Indian Astrology!

Descriptions of Kaliyug

Hindu scriptures mention that during the 432,000 years of Kali, humanity shall deteriorate and fall into barbarism. The world teems with fanatics and extremists and religion, truthfulness, cleanliness, tolerance, mercy, physical strength and memory diminish with each passing day.

Shrimad Bhagavatam says that the demon of Kali descended as soon as Krishna had left the planet. Arjun's granson Parikshit who was the ruler of the known world then encountered him in the form of a richly attired goon who was beating an ox mercilessly. The emperor stopped his chariot and immediately headed towards the spot to stop him but the man continued till three of the four legs of the animal were broken.

As Parikshit lifted his sword to kill the brute, he fell on his knees and begged to spare his life. He told the emperor that he was none other than Kali, the embodiment of Kaliyuga and his time on Earth had begun. In order to spread his rule he had to break the pillars of Dharma that the ox represented!

The emperor knew he could not halt the progress of Kali but he stopped him from completely maiming Dharma. The demon was allowed to reside in FOUR places - gambling houses and taverns, people with unbridled sexual desires, slaughter-houses where innocent animals are killed and in riches and gold.

No wonder then that most of the crimes we see today happen either in a state of intoxication or involve the misuse of natural resources due to excessive greed for money or take place due to uncontrolled lust and desire!!

To make it easier to understand the effect of Kali, let me share with you some bang-on descriptions about this age from Shrimad Bhagavatam, Ling Puraan, Vishnu Puraan and Mahabharat:

LEADERSHIP

Kings take to seizing property, rather than protecting the citizenry. Rogues and criminals become leaders to exploit and enslave their people. In this age, merely possessing wealth is considered a sign of good birth, proper behavior, and fine qualities. Law and justice are determined by one's prestige and power.

LOVE

Marriage ceases to exist as a holy union - men and women simply live together on the basis of bodily attraction and sexual pleasure. Women wander from one man to another. One's beauty is thought to depend on one's hairstyle. Monks break their vows of celibacy. Women, children, and cows - always protected in an enlightened society - are abused and killed during this age.

SOCIETY

Men no longer look after their parents in their old age, and fail to provide for their own children. Filling the belly is said to be the only purpose in life. Cows are killed once their milk production drops. Humans give in to intoxication, fornication and killing of animals without any restraint; family structure breaks up and children are abused and abandoned. Thieves are numerous and rapes are frequent. Everyone uses vulgar language.

Farmers abandon living close to nature. They become unskilled laborers in congested cities. Many dress in rags, or are unemployed, and sleep on the streets.

RELIGION

Atheism flourishes. Religious observances are performed solely for the sake of reputation. False doctrines and misleading religions spread across the globe. People prefer false ideas and do not hesitate to persecute religious preachers. Interestingly, not just Hindu but Buddhist texts also predict a decline in religion. Buddhism is prophesized to completely disappear during the Kali Yuga, and it will be virtually impossible for a person to find any opportunity for spiritual realization.

These descriptions are so apt for our society that they leave you wondering whether the authors had undertaken time-travel to visit the current age! Not only is this the exact current scenario but the accuracy of these predictions also fills one with a sense of hopelessness. However, one ray of sunshine exists in this gloom.

The Silver Lining

The Brahma-Vaivarta Puraan [4.129] records a coversation between Lord Krishna as He is preparing to leave Earth at the end of Dvapar Yuga and Goddess Ganga. Krishna tells the goddess who is distraught by the knowledge of Kaliyug's imminent arrival that she would be instrumental in delivering the souls of humans for the first five thousand years of this era and also mentions -

Kaler dasa-sahsrani
madbhaktah samti bhu-tale
ekavarna bhavishyamti
madbhakteshu gateshu cha

In Kaliyuga, for ten thousand years
My devotees shall remain on this planet
Only one varna shall remain
After their departure

This thus, is the 10,000 year Golden Period of Kaliyuga. Is there any scientific relevance of this 10,000 year period?

The answer again is in the affirmative. Currently the Earth is tilted at 23.44 degrees from its orbital plane, roughly halfway between its extreme values. The tilt is in the decreasing phase of its cycle, and will reach its minimum value around the year 10,000 CE. Besides, Earth's Precession shall make the Pole Star change from Polaris or Dhruv to Vega in the next 12000 years and I am not sure what kind of changes that would bring.

Some spiritual Gurus like Yukteshwar use the 24,000 period of Precession to describe Yugas as ascending or descending but based on the scriptures I don't believe this is mentioned in any of the religious scriptures! The Yugas follow a cyclical pattern of Satya-Treta-Dvapar-Kali and at the end of Kali, the golden age of Satyuga returns again in a continuous cycle. There is no swinging back through Dvapar and Treta as believed by certain western followers of the Yogi.

The proof in support of this assessment is that ancient Hindu astronomical text Surya-Siddhanta mentions precession as Ayanamsa with its current value while simultaneously mentioning the correct duration of the Yugas with the basic unit of 432000 years.

Even though we are born in this Age of Darkness, we are fortunate to have been born in a time when devotion to Krishna still exists on Earth! The scriptures also mention that it has never been simpler to achieve God than it is in Kaliyug for unlike Satyug where thousands of years penance was required to even get a glimpse of God, in Kaliyug, ALL you need to do is remember His NAME!
Incorrect interpretation of Yugas based on Precession
Incorrect interpretation of Yugas based on Precession
The actual cycle of Yugas would be as shown below
The actual cycle of Yugas would be as shown below

Even in the Judaeo-Christian tradition lot of importance is given to the name of God, ever heard this statement - Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name? The sentiment is echoed by the Sikh Guru Arjan Dev Ji in the following verse:

In Treta one had to do elaborate rituals like the Ashwamedh Yagnya and in Dvapar the mode of worship was through huge temples but in Kaliyug, just by remembering the name of the Lord one can get deliverance from the cycle of birth and death. 5000 years have passed and five thousand more remain of this period so let us make the most of it by following good Dharma and ensuring that THIS life is the last of an infinite cycle of births and deaths.

I end this post with an invocation from the Brihan-Naradiya Puraan -

Harer naam Harer naam Harer naamaiva kevalam
Kalau na asti eva na asti eva na asti eva gatir anyatha

In this Age of Kali,
There is no other Deliverance, No other Deliverance, No other Deliverance,
Than the name of Hari!

May the Lord have mercy on all :)

HINDUISM: A Vedic World - Oldest Living Belief System in the World

HINDUISM - The Oldest Living Belief System in the World.
Ancient Hindus called it the Sanatan Dharma or the Eternal Way of Life, for Hinduism is more a guiding philosophy than a religion in true sense of the word. Millenia after it originated, millions of Hindus all over the world still continue to follow the customs and beliefs practised and prescribed by their ancient Emperors, Sages and Magi.

My fascination with Hinduism began some years ago, with the realization, that of all the ancient religions of our World, Hinduism is the only one that is alive and thriving even today; boldly withstanding the ravages of Time n Tide as well as Travelers n Transgressors.

Over the Eons of its evolution and gradual distillation, Hinduism has developed into a highly personalized religion as each Hindu is allowed and encouraged to discover his own path to reach the Almighty. One has to listen to his own voice of conscience -the God within- to decide the right direction for himself.
The only requirement to be adhered to, is that the person does not leave the path of Dharma, and should strive to attain Moksh or Liberation from the Kalchakra, The cycle of Birth and Death and attain the abode of the Supreme God Himself.

The ancient seers of India scaled the pinnacles of Science and Spirituality to such an extent that it is difficult to differentiate the two in classical Sanskrit texts. I, being a student of science and by the virtue of growing up in a religious household, developed immense interest in finding out the commonality between these two branches of studies.

All Indian religions follow the basic principles of Hindu Philosophy, Cosmogony, Transcendentalism, Astrophysics, Metaphysics, Astronomy, Astrology, Mysticism and Spirituality which combined together, are an extremely rich source of scientific data about the beliefs of the ancients at the beginning of  Human History.

I have been involved, over the past few years, in researching ancient texts from Hindu, Jain, Buddhist, Tibetan, Sikh, Greek, Roman, Egyptian, Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, Islamic, Native American and African traditions in an endeavor to arrive at a common end point and I have realized that most so called myths in Indian and indeed the World religions, point towards one common source of all Spiritual and Scientific endeavor.

The collection presented here is an effort on my part to present and share that knowledge with people who may have a similar pursuit in mind.

I have divided the blog into different Pages such as History, Mythology, Sriptures etc. hoping to cover various interesting potentialities based on the research carried out by older as well as recent theologists and my own insignificant efforts to understand my roots in a better way.

The reader can click on any of the pages above and go through the introductory passages about each topic. You can also provide feedback through comments on the posts or share your thoughts by e-mailing me. The purpose here is not to glorify Hinduism above all religions because that is against the very nature of it! A true Hindu will always be open to respecting and learning from other religions and grow self spiritually.

Instead, the objective is to gain better insight into the basic philosophies and intricate mythologies of a religion which has never sought conversions or confabulations to spread its message and has still managed to influence thousands of people in hundreds of countries without resorting to the use of Sword or Evangelism.

I hope the readers who stumble upon this blog find the experience Enriching and Educational and if not either, at least Entertaining enough to germinate a new thought process in their own minds. I start this journey remembering my favorite Ganesha and sharing with you a verse I learnt in school.. Verse I-89-1 of the oldest written sacred text in the world, the Rig Veda.
